So I did it. Got it pierced. Now my navel has a cute little tiger's eye bead on a silver ring in it. BTW... in case any of you are wondering I have such a long slit in my navel because I once had surgery and they stuck a tube through there.... cute hunh?
The place I went to is called Tribal Ways and is awesome! I highly recommend it. Run by a nurse with emergency room experience... they autoclave everything and take blood borne pathogen and other anatomical classes. Piercers train for three years. So its cool because if I have any problems which so far I haven't then I can talk to them about it!!!
Downside... no hottubbing for at least a month... Verboten. So now I will be more sore from boxing for a while. Ahh well you guys are willing to let me bitch to you about it right? ;) Also gives me a new excuse for backrubs.
Also realized that if I do hook up with someone missionary style is not going to be so good for my belly. Time to get creative I guess.
One of the cool things is that they gave me a piece of jewelery called a captive ring. What rules about this is that the ball is held in by tension. This means if it gets caught on something the ball pops out instead of the piercing ripping my skin. Excellent.
You see I had been worried about just that. My mother taught my paranoia from a young age so I am always a little worried under the surface that my anklet is going to get caught in something moving or something. So in any case I recommend this type of jewelery.
This piercing is in a way a celebration. I feel like I have accomplished a lot this year even though I don't have much research to show for it. For example my "B" in electrodynamics was something I worked really hard for and I am proud of myself.
To answer any eager questions... yes of course it hurt... they stuck a needle through my skin, what do you think? but not horribly and not for long. My friend who went with said it looked really neat. They use a hollow needle that they push into a cork. Then they take off the cork and thread the jewelery through. Like I told the guy I have hurt myself worse hitting my elbow or knee against things. Certainly my hand hurt worse when I failed to break my boards during my green tip test, twelve times in a row. Hitting myself in the leg with the sledgehammer hurt worse. Surgery was more painful. And my kickboxing teacher landing on my foot with all her weight hurt worse too. Not to mention sprained ankles.... My point is that many of us go through pain all the time. Usually it is not caused intentionally but it happens. Pain should not be a barrier to doing something you want. You can't really avoid it in every day life.
So all in all I am happy even though this piercing is harder to take care of than tofu and other small pets. Will miss hot tubbing but you know they say absense makes the heart grow fonder.
At any rate cross your fingers that my coach remembers for the next couple weeks not to direct a hit to the solar plexus and I should be fine.
And yes the ring does make me feel sexier.
