I've Got Rhythm

I ask you to dance with me
and you say "I can't
I don't have any rhythm."

I laugh because that seems so stupid:
everyone has rhythm.
Everyone has a heart that beats,
everyone breathes in and out,
anyone who has ever fucked,
knows rhythm.

What you mean is that you either don't know how,
or are unwilling
to bend your rhythm,
curve it until it can meld with another's:
the composer, the musician, the choreographer,
or god forbid your partner.

You know the difference between a fucker and a lover don't you?
A lover will match their rhythm to yours.

So forgive me if I laugh,
because I was born with rhythm.
The heart beat of my mother
echoing in the womb
gave me my first impulse to dance;
my feet and hands jabbing at the space
that was becoming too small for my poetry of motion.

I have rhythm in my lips,
rhythm in my hips, rhythm in my feet and
rhythm in my tongue.

So try something daring,
let your rhythm free
let it escape and give it a chance,
you never know,
you might just learn,
to dance.
