(With an AA meeting feel)


Hi, my name is ____ and I am a code junkie….

This morning I hit rock bottom
eyelids peeling off
shucking my dried bloodshot eyes
scanning to my watch
shit, 6:30 need more sleep
is the message bouncing through my synapses
like electric pinball
on and off circuitry which commands
each movement and thought
but there is no repose for me
the code monkey is awake,
self-winding, crashing his symbols
pounding his drum
gnashing his teeth as he totters
like a candy filled two-year-old
faster and faster in circles
the glow of his eyes reflecting frenzy
and now lines of code
are zooming around in my brain
back and forth
awakening the age old curse
"Why doesn't the fucking thing work?"
I SCREAM
and so with only three hours sleep
I drag myself to the terminal
and plug in
I finally find the error
as usual I did something stupid
computer 6531 me 3
the monkey is dancing a mazurka now
and for five minutes I am giddy
drunk with success
until I see those words
looming larger than life on the screen
SEGMENTATION FAULT CORE DUMPED
a cryptic halo from the high-tech oracle
nonsense words spelling doom
like a banana slapping the face
of the masochistic code monkey
"Bring it on!" he roars
driving me, ever driving me
will I ever sleep again?
I used to fancy myself a code warrior
but every time I tried
to slip into my mild-mannered public identity
the monkey on my back gave me away
and employers….
have no respect for a recovering code junkie
offering up gems
with sweet serpentine words
"Just a couple more lines man,
then you can stop."
Am I doomed to wait hungrily
for my next chance
to boot up some of that
smooth code?
I need my sponser
where is the Twelve step program for me?
Listen up kids
take it from me
Don't ever start
cause the monkey with his titanium claws
tearing at your mind
will never let you be.
And I am doomed
to follow him through his paces
until
confused by earlier errors
I bail out.
