I know all of you out there have been dying to hear how my last two days went. "When is she going to post again?" you have been asking yourselves. "She must have been having some wild and crazy adventures if she hasn't posted recently."
Unfortunately no. I have not been having wild and crazy adventures. Wish I had. Lets see Monday night I cooked dinner for a starving undergrad and we watched Get Shorty... very fun Travolta film. Stayed up way too late talking... again.
Got to work late and ran data etc. Went that evening to a friends house who was going to help me get the fortran code that runs on windows to run on linux. Oh woe. Oh despair. From 9:30pm-3:30am we battled the ever elusive segmentation faults. And did we get it to work in the end? No. Why? Because I didn't write the code. Neither of us know fortran well, etc. So even though he is a fantastic programmer and I am a ok one we had no success.
So you can imagine how delighted I was the next day. Especially since I am supposed to have this thesis done by next Monday. I trudged to work and realized when I got here that I left my power supply at home. Then I went home to get it. I got back and knocked over the mug that I painted for the office and it broke.
I was so tired and nothing was really working right and I was on the verge of tears all day. At one point I did manage to get some insight from one of my coworkers who wrote the code. Then I had a lovely dinner with a friend. Food helps. Then I went home watched some tv and did laundry. Hung out with some friends for a couple more hours and then went to bed.
And today I am happier. Maybe it is because I slept pretty well. I don't know. I do know that it looks like the code for the windows box might not be working either which means I have lost another week of work. I kept thinking that with the next run I would see a change. We are looking for a turn around. Well it doesn't look like there is one.
Silver lining.... Sunshine time...
So bad thing about the linux version not working is that I can't run data on the three mega huge linux boxes at my disposal which would have meant getting lots of data run without much effort on my part. But last night when talking to a friend he offered to let the data run on his windows machine which will be dormant otherwise this weekend. This machine is much faster than mine. He also said that he would get his office mate to do this. Yay!!! Now if we can establish that the code does work or we can fix it by then and if I get the scripts written then I can get a lot done this weekend. I hope.
