On Friday I was at my physical therapists and I was listening to a broadcast on the Today show about infertility. Now many of you may not know that I am at a pretty high risk for infertility because of a disease I have called endometriosis. Now don't worry, its not fatal, catching or anything that any of you need to worry about.

But I have known for a while that I might have difficulty having kids, in fact docs have said to me things like.... you know you should try to get pregnant soon right? Yeah right. This is a good time for me to think about having kids. Right.

And so I have spent some time thinking long and hard about what I will do if it turns out that I have troubles getting pregnant. Its pretty easy I will adopt.

I don't care if my kid looks asian or is black. If I have a kid I want a kid... not a mini-me.

The show was mostly about women wanting more insurance companies to cover more infertility treatments. There are many levels to this... like drugs, in-vitro, etc. Lots of women say look if you are going to cover viagra then why not our sexual disfunction.

To tell you the truth I am torn. On the one hand I can sympathize. On the other hand I think wasting money and health risks to have infertility treatments is selfish and stupid. There are all kinds of kids that need homes that won't get them because they are in china, or yugoslavia and might not be white, and might not be your genetic material, but they will be your kid none-the-less.

I think in the long run that insurance companies have to decide if they are only going to cover life and death or quality of life problems. If its Q of L I can understand covering them... and seriously at 10k a pop invitro is not really an option for many people that might need it. But I also think that people need to realign their priorities. Sure there are difficulties with adopting... it costs money too and is complicated but at least that way you don't have to worry about getting pregnant with octuplets.
