I am Woman

I am Woman hear me ROAR

I am of a generation birthed by Women who chanted that mantra

I am of a generation who often thinks that feminist and lesbian
are synonymous.

I am constantly told by the powers that be to smother my outrage,
for women have equal rights.

Well damn the man,
for until the definition of beauty includes those whose weight is sufficient to bear a child,
until a woman with average girth and body fat is no longer considered EXTRA LARGE,
until the standards of feminine personal hygiene does not include ripping out
any random, errant, hair
I will continue to roar.

I, with a bachelor's of science
am instructed how to put batteries into a camera
by a fourteen year old
who thinks a penis is the only passport to technical competence.

Since I'm single, I get saddled with the title Miss,
short for Mistress,
stands for failing to be married,
not a hit,
but a miss.

I'm telling you here and now,
that until women make 100 cents to a man's dollar,
until police stop reporting that a wife's black eye
came from falling down the stairs.
until the length of a hem isn't considered an invitation to rape,
until insurance companies stop paying for Viagra,
or start realizing
that men aren't the only ones with sexual dysfunction
I'm going to roar.

I think its ironic, that the miracle
who's growth the WASP population doesn't want me to terminate
becomes a liability,
when because I took time out to care for it
I get passed over for a raise, or promotion.

Career woman equals bad mother.

I'll stop bitching when people incite to riot as easily
over a young girl being raped
as over a man being beaten.

When a virgin is no longer the only woman I am allowed to think of as holy,
and when Eve stops taking the fall for all of the
evil, deceit, hatred and violence in the heart of man,
I will rest.

When being ladylike,
doesn't require wearing shoes that make my back ache
and sitting in a way that cuts off circulation,
and when at last
my gender stops being a barrier to success in a man's world.

I will stop stoking the fire
of righteous indignation.
But until that fateful day
like my foremother's before me,
you will hear me roar.
